Special events at long-listed museums

To celebrate their nomination for The Art Fund Prize for museums and galleries, these special events have been organised at the long-listed museums to give you exclusive behind-the-scene experiences:

 

Private view of the London Transport Museum
This popular museum reopened at the end of 2007 following its £22million refurbishment. Lively exhibitions explore transport and the growth of modern London, its culture and society, from 1800. Come along to hear the Director, Sam Mullins, talk about the vision for the project and, in small groups led by Head Curator, Oliver Green, handle famous transport posters – exclusively on show at this private event.

Curator-led tour of the British Library
Join an exclusive curator-led tour of the Sir John Ritblat Gallery in the Library's St Pancras building. The gallery hosts a permanent display of over 200 great treasures including Magna Carta, the Gutenberg Bible, handwritten music and song lyrics by Mozart and the Beatles, notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci and some of the world's most sumptuous and valuable sacred texts. Tours will take place in groups of no more than 10.

Special Open Day at Shetland Museum and Archives
On Saturday 29th May Shetland Museum and Archives is offering a unique opportunity for visitors to see behind the scenes at the Archives and to learn more about the work which went into creating the new displays. A variety of events will be on offer – all free.

  • Guided tours of the Archive repository - never open to the public before - hourly from 11am to 4pm. Pre-booking required: call 01595 741554
  • Talk by Dr Ian Tait, Curator of Collections, on the development of the museum and archive displays. Auditorium – no booking required.
  • 12.30 ‘Introduction to the Archives’ – no booking required.
  • 2pm onwards ‘Ask the Archivist’ sessions – no booking required.

Behind the scenes at Helmand: The Soldiers’ Story at the National Army Museum
Join guest speaker Christina Lamb, the award-winning Sunday Times foreign correspondent, representatives from the Museum’s Arts department and the nominated exhibition team from the National Army Museum, who will be giving a fascinating insight into the history of conflict in Afghanistan and the creation of the exhibition. The evening will end with a drinks reception and a private viewing of the exhibition Helmand: The Soldiers’ Story

Can Design Change the World? – A debate at the Wellcome Trust
The Wellcome Trust is a place where people can learn more about the development of medicine through the ages and across cultures. This debate will explore the ways in which design and medical worlds intersect and ask whether design really can save your life? Journalist, author, and curator Henrietta Thompson will chair the debate with panelists: Ken Arnold, Head of Public Programmes for Wellcome Collection, Jim Dawton, Director of Pearson Matthews, known for the development of breakthrough healthcare products and Jeremy Myerson, Director of the Helen Hamlyn Centre at the Royal College of Art.

Evening reception at the British Empire & Commonwealth Museum
Breaking the Chains, at the British Empire & Commonwealth Museum, is a powerful and memorable exhibition which commemorates the bicentenary of the abolition of the British slave trade. It demonstrates the essential humanity of those enslaved by the transatlantic trade and uses authentic artefacts, film, music, photography, video and personal testimonies to provide visitors with a multi-sensory experience.  Enjoy a glass of wine and a talk by the Director, Dr Gareth Williams, followed by a private view of the exhibition and the permanent collection.

Evening reception at the International Slavery Museum 
Enjoy a glass of wine and a talk by the Director of Liverpool Museums David Fleming and Head of the Museum Richard Benjamin. The talk will be followed by a guided-tour of the museum which tells the largely hidden story of the exploitation of Africa and Africans within the transatlantic slave trade.
